Advanced Accredited Thinking School

The Rochester Grammar School is an Advanced Accredited Thinking School; a title awarded by the University of Exeter.

International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate is an international qualification, which RGS has offered since 2007 and has been recognised for over 40 years.

Sixth Form

The Rochester Grammar admits boys into our Sixth Form. All students will participate in the prestigious International Baccalaureate for their studies.

Our curriculum across a broad range of subjects is diverse, enriching and meticulously planned to provide students with the knowledge they need.

Curriculum

Our aim is to provide an excellent education for all our students, transforming their life chances and, give them the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

School Times

Our school day begins at 8.35am with registration and form time. There are five, one hour long, lessons during the day with a lunch break in the afternoon.

Bursary and Discretionary Funds

The 16 to 19 Bursary Fund provides financial support to help students overcome the specific financial barriers to participation they may face.

The IB: FAQs

The IB is the International Baccalaureate Diploma, it is a two-year programme available to all Sixth Form students.

Thinking Maps

The infusion of Hyerle’s Thinking Maps across the whole curriculum has provided our students with a method to sort and present information.

Thinking Hats

The six Thinking Hats are used in lessons to encourage students to think carefully and critically

Thinking Keys

We use the first version of Tony Ryan’s Thinking Keys to stimulate different types of Thinking. The Keys help ‘unlock’ critical and creative thinking.

Clubs and Enrichment Opportunities

Throughout the academic year we offer a range of different clubs and activities to students, both at recreation times and after school.

Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme helps young people to plan and undertake their own programmes of activity, to develop mentally, physically and emotionally.

Anthropology and Sociology

The purpose of both Sociology and Anthropology is to develop each student’s understanding of the social and cultural environments humans have built.

Chemistry

We endeavour to provide a pathway for our students to explore and understand the wonderment and awe of the everyday through the chemical sciences

Combined Science

Combined sciences is a wide raging curriculum that encompasses; Biology, Chemistry and Physics is designed to suit students with any scientific aspiration.

Computing

Computing is a subject for the future, and our intent is to equip our students with a digital toolkit that will prepare them for any path they opt to follow.

Design and Technology

‘Design and Technology students are creative problem- solvers, who can use their understanding of materials & processes to create working, sustainable outcomes’

Drama

Drama students gain and develop their creativity to follow their dreams and reach for the stars.

Economics

Economics is offered as IB Higher Level and Standard Level Economics in Key Stage 5 where students develop a critical understanding of economic theories.

English

‘Inspiring literature helps us to understand the world, and understanding language helps us to unlock great literature.’

Environmental Systems and Society

Environmental Systems and Society (ESS) is a complex course, requiring a diverse set of skills from its students.

Film Studies

Through a practical and theoretical approach, students are empowered to interpret, deconstruct, evaluate and create film.

Geography

Our intent is to teach Geography in a context that will stimulate students curiosity about the ‘physical’ and ‘natural world’ around them.

History

Our intent in History is understand, analyse and interpret the stories, controversies and events of the past and apply them to the present.

Mathematics

Mathematics provides a deep conceptual understanding of the world, enabling students who apply concepts accurately to approach and solve unfamiliar problems.

Modern Foreign Languages

In MFL, at the Rochester Grammar School, students learn “to interpret the world” around them.

Physical Education

Theory of Knowledge

The theory of knowledge lies at the very core of the International Baccalaureate. It develops skills like analysis and evaluation.

TOK, EE and CAS

Three additional components to the IB Diploma are: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity Action Service (CAS).
